NPR'S Renee Montage asks the ambassador about how the U.S. should proceed in Afghanistan. This interview provides an different perspective to American's involvement in the region. A lot of the points we've covered in class like Helmand Provence and "Little America" are mentioned.
While Avetisyan does have a very cynical view on the situation, I think what he says about the lack of major infrastructure projects is interesting. Why hasn't the US committed completely and tried to modernize Afghanistan to the greatest of our ability? Through Avetisyan's comparison of the situation now in Afghanistan to the situation in the 80's during Soviet occupation, he makes it very clear that, like the Soviets we have no ability to pull out now and still achieve our goals. This interview reiterates the idea that we cannot set a certain date to be out of Afghanistan because there is still so much work to be done.
ReplyDeleteMost of his ideas seem to go hand in hand with what Hoh wanted to do. America should also start and try learning the past.
